Solin and Salona




Solin is the town that grew around the Roman city of Salona where emperor Diocletian was born and raised. Salona was the 2nd largest city in the eastern empire with a population of approximately 65,000.

In the last years of the 3rd century AD, the emperor Diocletian had a monumental palace built in the vacinity of Salona, where he retired after his abdication.

The size, wealth and magnificence of this Roman city are testified by its impressive walls with towers and gates, the forum with temples, the threatre, the govenor's palace, the amphitheatre, as well as the unique bishop's seat and early Christian churches at the graveyards where the Salonitan martyrs were buried. Salona became the centre from which Christianity spread in the region.
